SXSW Summer Cinema Series

For the second year running, SXSW Film has partnered with Austin's most independent theater chain, the Alamo Drafthouse, to present encore presentations of some of the films showcased at this year's film festival. The SXSW Summer Cinema Series, beginning August 3rd, will feature a new film each week, screening exclusively at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown in Austin, TX. Come check out films you may have missed at SXSW 2004, or revisit films you loved the first time!

Contact the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown for specific times and ticket prices.

SXSW Film Conference & Festival

Richard Linklater and Jim Jarmusch Summer's here and the time is right to begin planning for SXSW 2005. New this year! DVD submissions accepted (in addition to NTSC VHS video).

SXSW Film 2005 will accept submissions for screening consideration during the SXSW Film Festival between September 1, 2004 and mid-December 2004. (Hint: Early entries save money on entry fees.) The online submission form will be available on the website by late-August. Pay the submission fee online with a credit card or check. You may also send in your submission with a check, money order or (we don't really recommend this) plain old cash.

Films screen in the following categories:
Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Animated Short, Experimental Short, and Music Video

Decide which category is appropriate for your film and keep in mind...
- to qualify as a short, your film must be 40 minutes or less
- experimental shorts are those with NO narrative thread

SXSW Film does not accept trailers or works in progress. If you send us a rough-cut, we cannot guarantee we'll have time to view a finished product, particularly if a new tape is sent after early January. Keep in mind that your film has a better chance of being selected if SXSW is able to review a finished product. The Festival can screen 35mm, 16mm, Beta SP, and digital projects. If your film is selected to screen, our technical staff will work to ensure the best screening format.

More details, including specific entry fees, the online application, and a submission FAQ will be available on the website soon.

The conference portion of SXSW Film has been described as a four-day crash course on guerilla filmmaking and marketing. The Festival has gained international acclaim for the quality of its programming with a special emphasis on emerging talents who bask in being included in the company of the cinematic greats whose work we regularly present. A portion of the above conversation between Jim Jarmusch and Richard Linklater is included with some of the video clips captured at SXSW Film 2004.
